What To Do When Your Art Is Too Small

Have you ever found yourself in this situation? You have moved to a new home and the art that worked wonderfully in your old home just doesn’t work in your new home because it’s just too small for the walls. Or, maybe you just purchased a new picture for your living room or dining room and it just looks lost on the wall (i.e. it’s too small). Basically, what you need to do is add a larger mat to your existing piece of art. It’s kind of like adding a mat to a print when your framing a picture. The mat makes your print look larger. Here’s an inexpensive way to visually make your art work appear larger. Choose a paint color that your are using in the room or a color that is in your art work. Go to your local paint store and purchase a sample of that paint. These are typically smaller than purchasing a quart of paint and will usually only cost around $8 to $10. You will also need a measuring tape, painter’s tape, level, paint brush, and a pencil.

The first thing that you need to do is to determine the size that your art work needs to be. If you are working with a grouping of prints you may want to paint a section of your wall from floor to ceiling. Second, take that measurement and draw a square or rectangle on the wall with a pencil. Make sure you use a level to get your lines straight. If your painting a section of the wall just use your level to draw a straight line from the ceiling to the floor. Third, take your painter’s tape around the outside of your pencil line. Make sure the tape is secured to the wall. Fourth, paint the rectangle, square or section and remove the tape. Let the paint dry completely. Fifth, hang your art in the center of the space and wala your done. Now you know what to do when your art is too small.
