How To Make Your Room Appear Larger

How to Make Your Room Appear Larger

Hi my name is Vicki Donovan and I’m a interior designer here in the Nashville area. Today I would like to talk about how you can make a room appear larger by using a few tricks of the trade. My example, is a master bedroom that I recently redecorated for a client.

Take a look at the before photo. What is the first thing that you notice? It’s very cluttered. There is way too much stuff in this room. The look today is clean and simple without a lot of clutter. Fortunately, my client’s had a local closet organizing company come to their home and reorganize their closet. This allowed them to move all of their clothing into their closet so that we could eliminate a lot of the furniture. My clients are avid readers and movie watchers. So, I designed a built-in to house their book and movie collections. We even made this large enough so that they could add to their collection. This piece pretty much takes up the entire length and height of one of our walls. Giving us some vertical lines which helps to make our room appear larger. It also balances out the visual weight of the king size bed and Bachelors chest at the other end of the room. I also added two leather recliners and a small table so that they could watch movies or read in their room.

Take another look at the before picture. Can you see how they shortened the look of the walls by adding a border and painted below it. They also shortened the height of the room by putting trim in the wrong place. Adding moulding to your room is a great way to add height to a room if it’s in the proper place. In our example, I added panel moulding to the slanted walls to add interest and we painted the wall color all of the way up to the ceiling. By doing those two things we made our wall look longer, wider, and taller. Thus, making our room appear larger. Let’s not forget about our 5th wall I.e. the ceiling. Always add interest to your space by decorating your ceiling. You could add crown moulding, panel moulding, or simply paint it a different color. You can make it as simple or elaborate as you choose. The reason you do this is because anytime you give your eye a reason to look up, it will make your room look bigger.

Adding draperies is another great way to add vertical lines to a space. Vertical lines give the illusion that your room is taller. So, always try to add vertical lines when decorating your room.

Make sure your lamps are in scale for the furniture that they sit on. You don’t want them to be too large or too small. Size your art to the size of your walls. Again, you don’t want it to be too large or too small. Remember, that it’s ok to have some blank wall space for your eyes to rest on.

So, the next time you want to decorate a room to make it look larger. Remember to eliminate clutter, add vertical lines, don’t cut up your wall if it isn’t very tall, think of ways to lengthen it, make sure your accessories are the appropriate size, and always decorate your 5th wall.
